Marquez vs Alvarez says Golden Boy Promotion?

Right now one of the hottest topics in the sport is what direction lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez will take next. Despite having a very financially-rewarding offer on the table to resign with Golden Boy Promotions and possibly land fights with Zab Judah or Robert Guerrero, the Mexico City star seems to be intrigued by the possibility of a third fight with WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

The history between Marquez and Pacquiao is controversial and bitter to an extent, as the two men engaged in a heated split draw in May of 2004 while Pacquiao won a razor-thin split decision nearly four years later. To this day Marquez, despite being dropped three times in the first fight and once in the second, claims that both fights belonged to him and seems to have somewhat of an obsession with his Filipino rival.

Marquez let his promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions pass by foregoing an April meeting with Erik Morales at the Mandalay Bay, making him a free agent in theory, and seems be very serious about an offer from Top Rank of a reported $5 million dollars plus pay-per-view incentives for a third Pacquiao fight.

Some are saying it is a no-brainer that the 37-year old Marquez will opt to side with the Pacquiao fight but Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer claims that it isn't so simple.

"Juan Manuel Marquez knows that prior to him entering into any agreement, he has to come to us and we have the right to match. He has not approached us yet with any such request to match," Schaefer told our friend Rick Reeno at BoxingScene.com.

Golden Boy reportedly has the right to match any offer from Top Rank up until February of 2012 and Schaefer seemed to pull a wild card in suggesting that Guadalajara's Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez may be the man to fill that void.

"[Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Saul Alvarez] would be a very colorful promotion. It sounds like, based on interviews that I've read, both from Juan Manuel and Nacho Beristain, that they are perfectly happy to fight at 147 pounds. Canelo said he would do 147. Canelo is actually going to start working out and training in Big Bear, and he'll have a full nutritional staff and so on. So for Canelo, if he needs to make 147, it's no problem to make 147."

While Schaefer seems like he may be reaching a bit on this one, seeing as though Marquez and Alvarez currently campaign three weight classes away from one another, I wouldn't be surprised to see such an offer thrown out just because of how serious they are in their efforts of retaining Marquez.

The news on this seems to be changing by the day and it's definitely an evolving story. But before anything Pacquiao needs to take care of his business against Shane Mosley this Saturday at the MGM Grand, a fight that is far from a lock despite the lopsided odds.

Oscar De la Hoya Rips Pacquiao over Marquez Trilogy

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya says the trilogy offer to Juan Manuel Marquez shows a level of disrespect by Manny Pacquiao and his promoters Top Rank. Marquez recently received an offer to face Pacquiao for a third time in the fall. The offer is reportedly a guarantee of $5 million dollars plus a pay-per-view percentage. De La Hoya says the offer was made at the wrong time because Pacquiao is facing Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. For me, [making that offer] shows disrespect to everyone in the press, the people and the fans. Because Pacquiao has a fight with Mosley and what does this tell you? That Pacquiao will defeat Mosley? It's not right. Maybe you wait a little bit, until after the fight and you see what happens because in this sport you never know what will happen. De La Hoya said.De La Hoya wished Marquez with "all of the luck in the world but said a trilogy fight would still need Golden Boy's approval.

Marco Antonio Barrerra

Marco Antonio Barrera Tapia a.k.a. "The Baby Face Assassin" was born on January 17, 1974 in Mexico City. The name Marco Antonio Barrera is one of the biggest name in boxing history, he is a former WBO Super Bantamweight Champion, IBO/WBC Featherweight Champion, WBC Super Featherweight Champion, and a IBF Junior LIghtweight champion. This accomplishments of Marco Antonio Barrera put his name as a future Hall of Famer in the world of boxing.

The young Barrera started his boxing career as a amateur and tallied a record of 56 wins out of 60 bouts. On November 22, 1989, Barrera made his pro debut as a 111-pound flyweight. Barrera was impressive in his pro debut by knocking out his opponent in two quick heats. After that he strongly recorded an impressive record by making a 43 winning streak as a professinal boxer. He captured many world titles and recognized as one of the best pound for pound figther.

He taste his first professional lost at the hands of Junior Jones on November 22, 1996 when he was stopped by speedy opponent at the round 5 but his corner man stepped up on the ring while there is a time left and Barrera suffered disqualification verdict. On April 18, 1997 the rematch took place between two warriors but still Barrera cannot match the style of Jones and suffered a unanimous decision in favor of Jones. One of the best highlights in the careeer of Marco Antonio Barrerra is when he battled with his fellow Mexican Erik "El Terrible" Morales wherein they create a trilogy to conquer a boxing supremacy on their class. Barrerra defeated Morales twice both on decisions and captured the WBC Super Featherweight crown from Morales.

But on November 15, 2005 he suffered his painful defeat courtesy of now boxing super star Manny Pacquiao from the Philippines with 11th round TKO but this bout was not a title fight but the winner was recognized by the ring magazine as a "People's Champion" in the featherweight division. After his lost he bounce back and defeat Erik Morales as a part of their trilogy and captured the WBC Super Featherweight Crown where he defended it many times and later on lost to Juan Manuel Marquez on March 2006. His final bout on his boxing career was a rematch of her conqueror Manny Pacquioa and once again lost but this time via a unanimous decision. Right now Marco Antonio Barrera holds a respect with fellow boxers and of course to the millions of fans of boxing. Many says he is done... but there also saying that the Baby Face Assassin will be back!

Unfinished Business

The anticipated rematch of WBC Super Featherweight king Juan Manuel Marquez againts Filipino star Manny " Pacman Pacquiao " and dubbed as " Unfinished Business "will be set on March 15, 2008 after a long wait of boxing fans around the world. As we all know that the two warrior met in a classic bout last May 2001 that ended a controversial draw wherein the two promising boxers acclaimed that they both win the bout.

This controversial draw left a big question to the boxing fans, to determine who is the best boxer on their weight class division, but this question will be answered as they will will meet again in the four sided ring to showcase their courage and determination to reclaim the supremacy. The WBC Super Featherweight belt of Juan Manuel Marquez will beat risk on this much awaited title bout.
